Nikko got involved with NUS Duke as a standardized patient. This allowed her to take on a different character every time she get involved in the session and to hone her skills. For the first session, Nikko played a 23 years-old social worker caring for a mentally challenged individual. What Nikko likes about the programme is that she is given the opportunity to pick up medical jargon from her interaction with the students. Nikko is also expected to deliver the same portrayal of the character to each student and doing so really tests her ability to be consistent in her performance.
About the standarized patient programme is that Standardized Patients (SPs) are individuals who are carefully trained to portray patient roles. The similarity of these portrayals to real patient situations allows the Duke-NUS students to conduct an actual clinic consultation on a Standardized Patient and allows each student to be assessed in a standardized and controlled environment, elements that increase the validity of student assessment. These simulated doctor-patient encounters are closely monitored under the guidance of Duke-NUS faculty members and are recorded/ video-taped for the purpose of learning and assessment.
Oh the horrors of an iphone, better luck with photo taking the next time around (:
